Research Background
SYNAPTIC TRANSMISSION AND NEUROVASCULAR COUPLINGSynaptic transmission is the primary signalling process between neurons in the brain, underlying most brain functions and implicated in most brain pathologies.
Neurovascular coupling is the complex chain of cell types and messengers subserving the metabolic requirement for increased availability of substrates of neurons during high activity and the vascular response to this demand, mainly local regulation of capillary perfusion and permeability. This process is poorly understood byt understanding neurovascular coupling is central to the understanding of brain ischemic diseases.
It is also the basis of the main diagnostic tool of brain function, fMRI imaging, a technique that infers increased neuronal activity from increased perfusion of brain vascular beds.
